Animal care: feeding, grazing and useful companions
Feed and pet your animals daily, remove barn waste with the Pitchfork, and keep hungry grazing animals away from growing crops. The early tutorial demonstrates feeding a mushroom directly to an animal. Check each companion’s skill and favorite food instead of assuming all animals serve the same purpose.
Quick guide
- Check feeding and petting before you leave the farm.
- Clean waste with the Pitchfork and use the appropriate care tool.
- Fence planted fields before allowing grazing near crops.
- Choose a mount, stamina companion or protection companion for the trip you are planning.

Feed animals without turning every weed into fodder
Eli’s tutorial shows a foraged mushroom offered directly as food. That gives you a practical alternative when you have little prepared feed. Grass is another fodder source: grow it and use the feed maker once available. Reserve scarce ingredients for requests when a common food can cover the animal’s daily care.
The same tutorial contrasts the weed-to-feed recipe with easier food options. Check the feed maker’s current recipe before committing a large stack; this guide does not assume every edible item is accepted by every animal.
Protect crops before using the grazing shortcut
The creator demonstrates that grazing animals can eat growing crops. Feed them first or separate the fields with fencing. The other beginner video suggests grazing before cleaning the barn to save feed; apply that only where animals cannot reach crops you want to keep. Saving fodder is not a useful trade if it costs your harvest.
Use the Pitchfork to remove waste. The prologue teaches that neglecting barn waste can make animals sick, so grazing does not replace the cleaning step.
Pick a companion for the task
| Your next task | Useful choice |
|---|---|
| Long overland route | A rideable horse to reduce dashing and travel effort. |
| Stamina-limited gathering | A cat: the tutorial demonstrates stamina recovery through petting, with a cooldown. |
| Wildlife encounter on a required route | Dandy’s calming skill is introduced in the prologue. |
| Fabric-dependent requests | A sheep for wool; keep its production rather than selling every bundle. |
Additional skills develop through care. Favorite food can improve an animal’s skill effects, but a mid-game cat with several unlocked abilities is not a promise that a freshly adopted cat gives all those bonuses.
Free barn space without abandoning an animal
Talk to Betty at the Animal Center about boarding and use the appropriate animal list. The Bloomfield chapter describes boarding as improving skill proficiency while preserving the animal’s affection and health. Retrieve it through the Boarded Animals list when you need it again.
